Dispersion

The variation of refractive index with wavelength, which can separate white light into spectral colors.[1]

Plain English

What it means

Different wavelengths travel through a material with slightly different optical behavior.

Why it matters

Dispersion contributes to colored flashes called fire when cut and lighting reveal it.

What it does not tell you

Visible fire also depends strongly on cut, lighting, and other optical factors.
