Mohs Hardness

A relative scale of resistance to scratching, ranked from 1 to 10 using reference minerals.[1]

Also known as: Mohs Scale

Plain English

What it means

Hardness tells how readily a surface scratches; it is not the same as resistance to breaking.

Why it matters

It helps assess wear and care requirements.

What it does not tell you

The scale is ordinal rather than linear and does not measure toughness or stability.
